GENERAL INFORMATION

What are the preschool’s operating hours?

Our programs run from September to June. The morning session for 3-year-olds operates Monday to Thursday, 9:10 AM to 11:10 AM, with 2-day and 4-day class options. The afternoon session for 4-year-olds runs Monday to Thursday, 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM, offering a 4-day class option.

What ages of children does the preschool accept?

We welcome 3-year-old and 4-year-old students. To be eligible for the 3-year-old program starting in September, your child must turn 3 before the end of the calendar year. For the 4-year-old program, your child must turn 4 before the end of the calendar year. 

What is the teacher-to-student ratio?

Each class has a maximum of 16 students, led by 2 teachers, maintaining a ratio of 8 students to 1 teacher. 

Is the preschool licensed and accredited?

Yes, University Hill Preschool is a licensed, non-profit society managed by an elected Board of Directors composed of parents of current students. 

ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT

How do I apply or enroll my child?

When registration opens, you can submit an online application form available on our website. After processing your application, we will notify you regarding availability. You can also contact us directly at registraruhill@gmail.com for more information.

Is there a waitlist?

Yes, if classes are full, we maintain a waitlist. Please contact us for the most up-to-date availability.

What are the tuition fees, and what does it include?

For the 2024-2025 school year:

• 3-Year-Old Program Part-Time (2 days/week): $258/month

• 3-Year-Old Program Full-Time (4 days/week): $386/month

• 4-Year-Old Program Full-Time (4 days/week): $438/month

Tuition includes all classroom activities and materials. Please note that tuition is subject to change.

Are there any discounts or financial aid options?

Financial assistance is available through the Ministry of Social Services for those who qualify. 

DAILY ACTIVITIES AND CURRICULUM

What is the daily schedule like?

Our daily schedule includes a balance of outdoor activities, structured learning, and free play. Engaging activities such as circle time, storytime, and snack time provide routine while fostering a sense of community and connection.

What curriculum or teaching philosophy does the preschool follow?

We blend the Reggio Emilia approach and Montessori philosophy, emphasizing child-centered, play-based learning that nurtures confidence and a healthy self-image through play and exploration.

Are outdoor activities included?

Yes, outdoor play is an essential part of our curriculum. Our secure, fenced-in play area features a sandbox and community garden beds, providing children with opportunities to play, explore, and connect with nature.

How do you accommodate children with different learning styles or needs?

Our curriculum is dynamic and adaptable, evolving each year to reflect the interests, ideas, and experiences that children bring to class. We are committed to supporting high-quality, inclusive practices in an environment that is reflective of every child’s capacity and interest. 

MEALS AND SNACKS

Do you provide meals and snacks?

Parents are responsible for providing snacks for their children. We encourage healthy, nut-free options to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

What is your policy on allergies and dietary restrictions?

We are a nut-free facility and take allergies and dietary restrictions seriously. Please inform us of any specific needs during the enrollment process so we can make appropriate accommodations.

SAFETY AND HEALTH

What are your safety and security measures?

Our facility is secure, with a fenced-in outdoor play area and established policies to ensure the safety of all children. Staff members are trained in emergency procedures, including lockdowns, to handle potential risks effectively. 

What is the protocol for illness or injury?

If a child becomes ill or injured, we will contact parents or guardians immediately. We follow health guidelines to manage illnesses and require children to be symptom-free for a specified period before returning to school.

What is your vaccination policy?

We adhere to public health guidelines regarding vaccinations. Parents are required to provide up-to-date immunization records upon enrollment.

COMMUNICATION

How do you communicate with parents about their child’s progress?

We provide regular updates through our newsletters. Parents receive one newsletter with information about upcoming activities and another with updates and stories about the children in preschool. Open communication is encouraged, and parents are always welcome to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Can parents visit or volunteer in the classroom?

Yes! We encourage parents to sign up as volunteers for various activities, including accompanying us on field trips.

MISCELLANEOUS

What is the policy for drop-off and pick-up?

Parents are responsible for timely drop-off and pick-up of their children. Specific procedures and designated areas for drop-off and pick-up will be communicated upon enrollment to ensure safety and efficiency.

What supplies does my child need to bring?

Children should bring a backpack containing a change of clothes, a water bottle, and a healthy, nut-free snack. Additional items may be requested based on specific activities or projects.

Do you have holiday or summer programs?

Our programs run from September to June, and we observe standard school holidays and breaks. Currently, we do not offer summer programs.

What is the policy for inclement weather or school closures?

In the event of inclement weather or emergencies, we follow the decisions of the local school district regarding closures. Notifications will be sent to parents via email and posted on our website.

How do you handle discipline?

We adhere to a Guidance and Discipline Policy that focuses on positive reinforcement, setting clear expectations, and using redirection techniques. Our goal is to help children develop self-regulation and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment. 

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

Are there extracurricular activities or enrichment programs?

Yes, we incorporate various enrichment activities into our curriculum, such as gardening, nature walks, creative arts projects, and field trips to enhance learning experiences. 

Do you celebrate birthdays or other special events?

Yes! Throughout the year, we celebrate birthdays and cultural traditions such as New Year, Lunar New Year, Diwali, and Mother’s Day through engaging activities like artwork and storytelling. We also participate in community events, incorporating them into our thematic learning projects to deepen children’s understanding of diverse cultures and traditions while fostering a strong sense of community.

EMERGENCIES AND CONTINGENCIES

What happens if my child is not adjusting well to preschool?

We work closely with families to support each child’s adjustment, utilizing strategies tailored to individual needs. Open communication between parents and teachers is encouraged to address any concerns promptly.

What is the refund policy if we withdraw early?

Once you have been notified of your acceptance in the program and the cheques have been received by the registrar, both the registration fee and the June deposit are non-refundable. For detailed information, please refer to our refund policy

How do you handle emergencies, such as fire drills or lockdowns?

We have established Lockdown Policies and Procedures to ensure the safety of children, staff, and visitors during emergencies. Regular drills are conducted to familiarize everyone with the protocols.

Is parking available?
Yes, there is a parking lot available for cars.

Is the preschool accessible by public transit?
Absolutely! The preschool is accessible by public transit, with bus routes including 004, 009, 014, 258, and N17.

Is the preschool building wheelchair and stroller accessible?
The preschool is primarily on one level, making it convenient for families with strollers or wheelchairs. However, please note that the coat cubbies are located down a short set of stairs.
